Hire a Crestron programmer with the right platform experience
Separate Crestron Home configuration, custom programming and field commissioning before posting your opening. Name the platform and deliverables your project needs, then assess evidence of comparable work.
Choose between configuration and custom programming
A vacancy that says only “Crestron experience” leaves the central question unanswered: what will the person build or maintain? Identify whether the project uses Crestron Home, a custom control program or a combination with explicitly assigned interfaces.
Crestron's current Crestron Home product manual describes Configure Pro as its configuration platform and directs older systems to separate legacy documentation. A candidate's experience should match the installed processor, firmware and tools. Do not assume that experience with one generation proves experience with every current or legacy system.
For custom programs, name the tools and languages actually used by your team, such as SIMPL, SIMPL+ or C# where relevant. Crestron's SIMPL software reference describes its control-programming environment. Specify any existing modules, integrations and user-interface work the successful applicant will inherit.
Crestron Home configuration responsibilities
A Crestron Home role may include organizing rooms and devices, setting up supported controls, checking equipment connections, configuring scenes and verifying the homeowner's everyday operations. State who designs the system and who approves the requested behaviors. Describe any drivers or integrations that require support beyond the configurator's own assignment.
Ask candidates to explain a completed project, the configuration tools used and how they checked the result in the home. Have them distinguish a supported configuration change from work that calls for custom development or a different specialist. Good evidence includes a clear account of their own responsibilities and permitted, redacted closeout records.
Custom programming and integration responsibilities
A custom programmer needs a defined behavior specification: what each interface controls, what feedback should appear and how the system responds when equipment is unavailable. Explain whether the role includes adapting an existing program, developing new logic, maintaining modules, building interfaces or diagnosing a service issue.
List the devices and integration methods that matter to this assignment. Network experience should be tied to concrete duties and coordinated with the customer's network owner. A long list of brands is less useful than identifying the processor, software workflow and integrations the person must handle independently.
Residential projects and commercial environments
For a high-end residence, discuss coordination with AV installers, lighting-control technicians, the builder and the homeowner. Define access windows, who collects operating preferences and how late changes are approved. Project-file handover and a usable homeowner walkthrough should be part of the scope from the beginning.
For offices, hospitality or other commercial sites, name the spaces and the team responsible for ongoing support. Explain whether installations are repeated across rooms, whether work occurs in occupied areas and which tests must pass before the system is released to users. Travel, commissioning windows and service coverage belong in the vacancy.
Assess candidates through a bounded project discussion
- Ask for a comparable system and the candidate's personal contribution. Separate configuration, programming, installation and commissioning work.
- Give a short, fictional control scenario and ask how they would clarify missing requirements, structure the work and test the result.
- Discuss a fault in which a command is sent but the expected feedback never arrives. Look for an orderly diagnostic process rather than unsupported guesses.
- Ask how they maintain backups, document changes and transfer project knowledge to a service team.
- Verify any claimed manufacturer training or certification directly. State whether a credential is required or preferred for this opening.
Do not request confidential customer source files or expect a candidate to complete a live client project as an interview exercise. Use redacted examples or a small demonstration the candidate is entitled to share. The broader AV technician interview guide can supplement the conversation but does not establish Crestron-specific competence.
Crestron programmer job description template
The following is a planning template, not a live job. Replace every bracketed field before publication.
- Position: [Crestron Home configurator, custom Crestron programmer or commissioning specialist].
- Platform: [processor family], [firmware], [configuration or development tools] and [existing program or new project].
- Project scope: [rooms or buildings], [system functions], [devices] and [assigned integrations].
- Deliverables: [configuration or source files], [interface work], [test records], [change log] and [handover package].
- Required experience: [comparable platform work] and [independent responsibilities].
- Support and training: [installation lead], [network owner], [project manager] and [training available].
- Location and schedule: [onsite or remote duties], [travel], [commissioning windows] and [service coverage].
- Compensation and arrangement: [actual pay or engagement-rate range], [employment arrangement], [benefits] and [expenses].
- Reporting and approvals: [technical lead], [review milestones] and [person authorized to accept changes].
Agree project-file and service handover
Set expectations for file access, backups, passwords held through approved channels and ownership of project deliverables before work begins. Identify the files the company needs to maintain the system and any third-party dependencies. Require a version record and a list of unresolved issues rather than treating a successful demonstration as the whole closeout process.
A service assignment also needs access to the existing project and a defined escalation path. Confirm what documentation is available and which changes the person is allowed to make. Advertise those realities instead of promising an unrestricted programming role.
Post the opening for the role you need
Post a Crestron programmer or configuration opening with the platform, project scope, pay and handover requirements. BEJ provides the job-posting workflow; your team interviews applicants and verifies their qualifications. For installation staff, use the AV technician hiring guide. For a separate lighting-control assignment, see Lutron technician hiring.
