Hire Lutron technicians for your lighting-control projects

Specify the Lutron system, project phase and responsibilities before recruiting. Installation coordination, programming and customer support need different evidence, even when one person performs more than one part of the work.

Name the actual Lutron system

A job description should say whether the technician will work with HomeWorks, RadioRA 3 or another identified system. Include the installed generation, processor and relevant device or shade scope. Experience with a familiar Lutron wall control alone does not establish experience programming a whole-home system.

Lutron's residential system comparison distinguishes its residential platforms and setup tools. Use the product documentation for the actual installation when preparing the vacancy. Describe older or mixed systems plainly instead of assuming that every opening uses the newest hardware.

HomeWorks experience

For a HomeWorks role, ask candidates which system generations they have worked on and what they personally completed. A useful discussion covers how the project was organized, which equipment was installed, how the agreed lighting or shade behaviors were checked and what records were handed to the customer and service team.

Define whether the role includes project preparation, programming, device activation, commissioning, fault diagnosis or ongoing service. Separate those tasks from electrical installation responsibilities and identify the team coordinating the wiring and equipment connections. Manufacturer product training and authorization should be checked for the assignment your company actually needs.

RadioRA 3 programming and app configuration

Lutron's RadioRA 3 programming overview distinguishes Lutron Designer programming from app-based configuration. It states that access to Designer follows completion of RadioRA 3 Qualification Training. Verify that a candidate has the relevant training, access and practical experience for the duties you advertise.

Ask which parts of a RadioRA 3 project the person has completed: preparation, activation, programming, integration, testing or homeowner adjustments. A candidate who has changed scenes in an app may have useful customer-support experience, but that example alone does not demonstrate the full commissioning role.

Coordinate installation and programming

Make the division of work explicit. Identify who follows the approved design, installs or connects equipment, records device locations, programs controls and accepts the final result. Name the person responsible for resolving a design change and communicating it to the electrical, lighting and integration teams.

For a renovation, describe existing equipment, documentation gaps and access restrictions in the finished home. For new construction, explain when the technician participates in planning, installation checks and final commissioning. If the vacancy includes electrical installation, verify the requirements for that exact work and location separately from manufacturer training.

Define commissioning around customer use

A commissioning checklist should reflect the project specification and customer requirements. Discuss room and control naming, agreed scenes, schedules, shade behavior where included, and interfaces to other systems. Identify which tests the technician performs and who approves the completed work.

Ask applicants how they handle a customer request that changes the agreed behavior late in the project. Look for a recorded change, a clear approval and repeat testing of affected functions. Good handover also includes an accessible explanation of everyday controls, a backup record and the service contact process.

Questions that reveal relevant experience

  • Which HomeWorks or RadioRA 3 projects have you completed, and which tasks were yours?
  • What system information do you collect before starting a takeover or service visit?
  • How do you separate an installation problem, a programming problem and a user-preference change?
  • How do you document a device location or control-name discrepancy and coordinate its correction?
  • What do you include in the final commissioning and customer-handover record?
  • What training do you currently hold, and how can the employer verify it?

Use a short fictional project description for assessment. Ask the candidate to identify missing information and propose a completion checklist. Do not request another customer's private project files or accept a credential name as a substitute for discussing the actual work.
