Hire AV technicians for the systems you install
Recruit for a defined AV installation, integration or service role. Explain the equipment, work setting and handover responsibilities so candidates can see whether their experience fits your opening.
Define the AV work before choosing the title
An AV technician can install permanent systems, support meeting rooms, service equipment or operate live events. Those assignments call for different experience. AVIXA's AV technician occupation guide describes this broad field; your vacancy should identify the particular work your team has available.
For permanent installation, name the rooms and systems: home theaters, distributed audio, conference rooms, classrooms, displays, projectors or control interfaces. State whether technicians follow an approved design, make configuration changes, commission the completed system or provide continuing support. Publish separate openings when the responsibilities and pay differ substantially.
Match the experience level to the responsibility
AV installation technician
An installer may mount equipment, build racks, pull and terminate assigned cables, label connections and check work against drawings. Explain the supervision provided and which tasks require previous independent experience. A capable installer does not automatically have the programming or system-design background required for every integration.
Lead AV technician
A lead coordinates the installation sequence, checks workmanship, resolves drawing discrepancies through the project team and maintains the completion list. Ask for examples of directing a small crew, managing unfinished work and handing a system to the commissioning specialist. Describe the actual crew size and reporting relationship.
Commissioning or integration specialist
Define who configures devices, verifies signal paths, tests user controls, diagnoses network dependencies and records acceptance results. Identify any audio adjustment, control programming or manufacturer-specific work explicitly. For custom controls, use the separate Crestron programmer hiring guide.
Residential and high-end AV installations
Working in a finished home adds responsibilities beyond connecting equipment. Describe protection of floors and furnishings, agreed access hours, communication with the homeowner and coordination with the builder, designer and electrical team. A retrofit may involve limited cable routes, existing equipment and incomplete drawings; a new build may require rough-in inspections and staged returns.
For home theater installer roles, specify mounting, speaker and display scope, equipment configuration and the person responsible for final adjustment. For whole-home audio, identify zones, control interfaces and integration responsibilities. Assess whether candidates can explain both the technical work and the customer handover without claiming that every residential installer is a programmer.
Commercial installations and occupied-site work
Office, education and hospitality projects often need room-by-room records, repeatable configurations and coordination with a customer's IT team. State who approves network settings, who supplies equipment credentials and when rooms can be taken out of service. Include any evening installation windows or travel between customer sites in the advertised schedule.
For service openings, distinguish planned maintenance from urgent fault response. Explain the systems supported, escalation process and on-call expectations. Do not bury recurring service duties inside a construction-only job title.
Skills to verify with practical evidence
- Ask the candidate to walk through a recent installation, identifying the work they personally completed.
- Review a redacted rack layout, cable schedule or completion record when the candidate has permission to share it.
- Discuss how they trace a missing audio or video signal before changing settings.
- Ask how they record a failed test, escalate a design conflict and protect an occupied customer's equipment.
- Verify named training or credentials against the requirements of the actual role. Treat courses, certifications and project experience as separate evidence.
Use the AV technician interview guide for additional prompts. For residential installation, the home theater installer interview resource helps structure a role-specific discussion.

Set a clear completion standard
Agree what a successful installation looks like before evaluating applicants. Useful deliverables include labeled equipment, tested source-to-display or source-to-speaker paths, documented settings, an open-item list and a customer walkthrough. Identify who accepts the work and who owns the project files. Any electrical or specialist work outside the assignment should have a named responsible trade or team.
