Data center electricians install, test, maintain, and repair the power systems that keep servers running. The work can include switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, automatic transfer switches, power-distribution equipment, grounding, controls, and branch circuits.
It is a strong specialty for electricians who like commercial or industrial systems, careful procedures, and work where downtime matters. It is not one standard job, though. Construction, commissioning, and live-facility operations have different schedules and skill requirements.
The fastest way into this work is usually through the electrical contractor building the facility, not the technology company’s corporate career page.
Why data center electrical work is booming
Meta’s new Lebanon, Indiana data center shows the scale. The announced campus is a more than $10 billion, 1 GW project covering roughly 4 million square feet. Meta expects approximately 4,000 construction jobs at peak.
Faith Technologies, one of the named project partners, is already advertising electricians and electrical/low-voltage apprentices in addition to leadership roles. The public Lebanon page does not state the field rate, so we do not estimate one.
Other current data center projects show what demand can do to field pay. Published journeyman offers in Iowa and New Mexico advertise roughly $64 to $65 per hour, heavy overtime, and more than $1,100 per week in per diem for eligible travelers. Those terms can put an electrician near $280,000 during an unusually long project year. What does a data center electrician do?
A data center electrician may work on the path from the utility service to the server rack. Typical tasks include:
- Installing conduit, cable tray, feeders, branch circuits, grounding, and bonding
- Terminating and testing panels, transformers, switchgear, and distribution equipment
- Connecting UPS systems, generators, automatic transfer switches, and power-distribution units
- Reading one-line diagrams, control drawings, panel schedules, and equipment instructions
- Supporting equipment startup, functional testing, and commissioning
- Performing preventive maintenance in an operating facility
- Responding to alarms or failures under an approved procedure
- Recording test results, changes, deficiencies, and turnover information
No electrician handles every system alone. Large data centers divide work among electrical contractors, controls technicians, equipment vendors, commissioning agents, engineers, and the owner’s operations team.

Which electrical systems should you know?
You do not need expert knowledge of every item before applying. You should be able to explain the systems you have actually worked on and how you kept the work safe.
Utility service and medium-voltage distribution
Large facilities may receive medium-voltage utility service and use transformers and switchgear to distribute power. Switching and testing this equipment requires employer qualification, site procedures, and the correct protective equipment. Do not claim medium-voltage experience based only on classroom exposure.
Generators and transfer equipment
Generators provide longer-duration backup power. Automatic transfer switches move a load between approved sources. Electricians may install feeders and controls, inspect connections, help with testing, or support maintenance.
UPS systems and batteries
An uninterruptible power supply carries critical load through a short interruption and supports the transition to backup generation. Large battery strings or other energy-storage systems provide the ride-through energy.
Electricians may install feeders and control wiring, make approved equipment connections, support battery-cabinet installation, verify torque and labeling, or help with testing and commissioning. UPS and battery equipment can contain hazardous stored energy even when one upstream source has been opened. Workers need the equipment procedure, correct boundaries, and every energy source identified before work begins.
Power distribution to the rack
Power may pass through switchboards, panels, power-distribution units, remote power panels, busway, and rack power strips before it reaches IT equipment. Exact designs differ by site.
Grounding, bonding, controls, and monitoring
Reliable grounding and bonding, accurate metering, and clear alarm signals are part of the electrical system. Electricians may also interact with an electrical power monitoring system or building management system while controls specialists handle programming and integration.
What qualifications do data center electricians need?
Most employers start with the qualifications expected for commercial or industrial electrical work:
- Completed apprenticeship or documented trade experience
- Journeyman or other required local license
- Ability to read drawings and one-line diagrams
- Experience with larger distribution equipment
- Proper test-instrument use
- Lockout/tagout and electrical-safety training
- Clear written turnover, inspection, and maintenance records
The BLS electrician career guide says most electricians learn through an apprenticeship and most states require licensing. Local law and the employer decide which license is required for a specific site.
For workers servicing equipment, OSHA requires employers to control hazardous energy and train workers on the applicable procedures. How do you become a data center electrician?
1. Build a real electrical foundation
Data center work is not an entry-level shortcut around an apprenticeship. Learn safe installation and troubleshooting first. Commercial, industrial, utility, controls, and critical-facility experience can all transfer.
2. Get the license required where you want to work
License names and rules change by state and sometimes by city. Check the authority that has jurisdiction instead of assuming a license transfers.
3. Learn mission-critical equipment
Read job postings in your market and make a list of repeated systems. Common terms include switchgear, generators, ATS, UPS, PDU, busway, EPMS, BMS, commissioning, infrared inspections, power quality, and preventive maintenance.
Focus on the equipment you can access safely through your employer, apprenticeship, manufacturer training, or a qualified lab. A certificate without hands-on work does not authorize someone to operate electrical equipment.
4. Learn the operating discipline
In a live data center, the procedure matters as much as the repair. Employers want electricians who can:
- Check the approved scope before starting
- Identify every energy source
- Use the site’s lockout/tagout process
- Confirm equipment state
- Stop when field conditions do not match the plan
- Communicate with operations and other trades
- Record the final equipment condition
The strongest interview answer is rarely “I would just fix it.” It is a safe, controlled sequence with clear escalation.
5. Show equipment and scope on your resume
Instead of writing “experienced industrial electrician,” name the work:
- Installed and terminated 480-volt feeders for switchboards and distribution panels
- Tested grounding and bonding connections and recorded results
- Supported generator and automatic-transfer-switch functional testing
- Read one-line diagrams and completed redlines for field changes
- Performed preventive maintenance under an approved energy-control procedure
- Led a crew installing busway, cable tray, or branch circuits in an active facility
Only list equipment you can discuss in detail. Hiring managers will ask what you did, what voltage you worked around, which test method you used, and who authorized the task.
6. Apply to both contractors and operators
Electrical contractors hire for new construction, expansions, fit-outs, and service. Data center owners and facilities companies hire for operations and maintenance. Commissioning firms and equipment manufacturers hire technicians for startup and testing.
The work experience is different:
- Construction can mean large crews, schedule pressure, overtime, travel, and a clear project end.
- Operations can mean rotating shifts, preventive maintenance, alarms, strict change control, and long-term site knowledge.
- Commissioning can mean detailed test scripts, travel, irregular hours, and close coordination with several companies.
Where to apply for data center electrical construction
Follow the project chain:
- Owner: Meta, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, or another operator may hire facilities and subject-matter experts.
- General contractor: Large builders hire superintendents, project managers, safety, quality, and commissioning staff.
- Electrical contractor: This is where many electricians, apprentices, foremen, and electrical project leaders are hired.
- Low-voltage or fiber contractor: These employers hire cable technicians, fiber installers, testers, and rack crews.
- Equipment and commissioning companies: Switchgear, UPS, generator, battery, controls, and testing companies hire field technicians.

How much do data center electricians make?
There is no separate BLS wage category for “data center electrician.” These workers are usually counted under electrician or another occupation based on their duties. That means a salary website cannot honestly give one official national average for this exact title.
The May 2025 BLS data for electricians showed:
- $30.38 per hour at the national median
- $40.36 per hour at the 75th percentile
- $52.17 per hour at the 90th percentile
- $71,490 per year as the national mean
Data center offers can land below or above those points. Location, license, shift, overtime, construction agreement, per diem, medium-voltage experience, commissioning duties, and crew responsibility all matter.

The offers were live or recently published when reviewed on August 23, 2026. They require licensed journeymen and can change or close. Apprentices, local journeymen, travelers, and permanent operations workers can have very different pay structures.

Can a field electrician make $150,000 to $280,000?
Yes, without becoming a foreman. The largest totals require a high hourly rate, sustained overtime, and travel per diem.
One current offer advertises $65 per hour, 60 hours each week, and $160 per day in per diem paid seven days a week. Assuming time-and-a-half after 40 hours, the weekly calculation is:
- $2,600 for the first 40 hours
- $1,950 for 20 overtime hours
- $1,120 in weekly per diem
- $5,670 in combined weekly wages and per diem
Fifty weeks at those terms would equal $283,500. That is not a $283,500 base salary. The total depends on keeping the schedule, qualifying for per diem, staying on the project, and paying the costs of living away from home.

Ask how the advertised annual number was calculated. A useful offer comparison separates:

It can be a good fit if you want technically demanding commercial or industrial work and you are comfortable with documentation and strict procedures. It may be a poor fit if you dislike shift work, large projects, repetitive preventive maintenance, or decisions that require several approvals.
Questions to ask before accepting a job include:
- Is this new construction, commissioning, or live operations?
- Which systems will I personally work on?
- What license and employer qualifications are required?
- What is the normal shift and rotation?
- How much travel and overtime occurred on this team last year?
- Who writes and approves switching or energy-control procedures?
- Is the project permanent, a fixed-duration contract, or a traveling assignment?
- What training is provided before I work around unfamiliar equipment?
Data center electrician vs. low-voltage technician
A data center electrician works on electrical installation, distribution, backup power, controls, and testing. A low-voltage technician builds the structured-cabling and fiber systems, dresses cable, terminates and tests links, and may rack and stack equipment.
