Apprentice electrician duties

  • Assist licensed electricians with layout, conduit bending, wire pulling, terminations and device installation.
  • Prepare work areas, stage materials and keep tools, gang boxes and the jobsite organized.
  • Follow lockout/tagout and site safety procedures and ask before working near anything that may be energized.
  • Read basic drawings and job instructions with guidance from your supervisor.
  • Complete classroom and related instruction requirements and keep your hours log current.
  • Report damaged materials, safety hazards and questions to the supervising electrician.

Required vs. preferred

Required

  • Minimum age and education required by the apprenticeship program: [for example, 18 and a high school diploma or equivalent].
  • Reliable transportation to [jobsites / shop] and the ability to start at [time].
  • Ability to perform the physical tasks of the job: [describe lifting, ladders, crawl spaces and outdoor work], with reasonable accommodation.
  • [Registration as an electrical apprentice or trainee, if your state requires it before field work.]

Preferred

  • Completed pre-apprenticeship, trade school or vocational coursework.
  • Construction, maintenance or helper experience.
  • [OSHA 10] card.

Keep the required list short. Every extra requirement filters out people who could do the job.

Setting the pay range

Registered apprenticeship programs set a progressive wage schedule, usually stated as a percentage of the journeyworker rate. Publish the starting rate, how often it increases and what triggers each step. For a non-registered helper role, state the hourly range and the review schedule.

Screening questions

Ask about a real job, the person's own part in it and how they checked the result.

  1. Why do you want to become an electrician, and what have you done so far to get started?

Listen for: Concrete steps such as coursework, a program application or related work, not just interest.

  2. What would you do if a journeyman asked you to work on something you weren't sure was de-energized?

Listen for: Saying they would stop and ask to verify. Willingness to speak up is the point.

  3. Tell me about a job where you had to show up early, in bad weather or after a long day.

Listen for: Reliability and a realistic understanding of construction schedules.

  4. Are you enrolled in, or have you applied to, an apprenticeship program?

Listen for: Program name and status, so you can plan supervision and school schedules.
