Hire data-center cooling technicians
Name the plant before you write the vacancy. Installing pipework, servicing a chiller, and supporting a liquid-cooling system are different jobs.
Cooling equipment and assigned work
List the chillers, air-handling equipment, pumps, piping, or liquid-cooling equipment assigned to the role. Include the equipment families and the installation or service work they need to handle independently.
A mechanical installation crew needs drawings, work areas, materials, and a lead checking completed work. An operations technician needs plant knowledge, maintenance records, a shift plan, and specialist support. If the position covers both, explain the split.
For liquid cooling, describe the actual assignment. Installing distribution pipework, commissioning equipment, and maintaining the facility's cooling systems require different experience. Don't turn an unfamiliar technology name into a requirement without explaining the work behind it.
Service faults and return visits
Ask about an equipment problem the candidate diagnosed. What was reported, what did they observe, and what did each check establish? Ask which work they completed and where they needed controls, electrical, or manufacturer support.
Then ask about a problem they couldn't finish on the first visit. What information went to the next technician? Which parts or approvals were still needed? A useful answer accounts for the equipment's current condition and the next appointment.
Use a fictional service history for a repeat alarm. Let the applicant explain what else they'd want to know. Keep the discussion on diagnosis and coordination; a hiring conversation doesn't need a live equipment demonstration.
Mechanical installation and coordination
Ask how they handled a route or equipment location that didn't fit the site. Who reviewed the change? How did they avoid leaving the next crew with an obsolete drawing?
For a pipefitter or lead, discuss the installation package, inspection and test responsibilities, materials, and records required before acceptance. Name who owns those checks on your job. For ductwork, use the sheet-metal hiring guide.
Maintenance shifts and technical support
Explain the shift, work windows, escalation route, and people available for other systems. Ask about a maintenance task that had to be postponed and how it stayed on the schedule.
State whether the technician keeps maintenance records, coordinates vendors, or hands open work to another shift. Those responsibilities take time; include them when planning the role.
Qualifications and working terms
Include the site, equipment, construction or operations duties, qualifications, training, supervisor, shift, on-call rotation, pay range, benefits, tools, and travel arrangements. Verify credentials for the assigned work and location.
Post the cooling vacancy. For other buildings, use HVAC technicians. For a broader operations shift, see critical-facilities technicians.
