Hire sheet-metal workers
Decide whether the vacancy is in the shop, on the installation crew, or leading field work. Put the drawings, materials, and responsibility beside the title.
Shop fabrication or field installation
Describe the materials, systems, equipment, and work your company assigns. A shop hire needs the fabrication work and tools in the brief. A field installer needs the project types, drawings, access, and supervision. A lead needs the crew size and coordination responsibility.
If the job moves between shop and site, explain the split and reporting points. Include travel and project duration. Applicants shouldn't discover on the first morning that the job is an hour from the address in the ad.
Verify the qualifications needed for the assigned work and location. State which tasks require prior experience and which your crew can teach.
Dimensions and drawing changes
Ask about a fabrication or installation drawing that didn't match the field measurement. What did the candidate check, who reviewed the issue, and how did the approved answer reach the shop or crew?
Use a fictional sketch if you want a short exercise. Ask what additional information they need before making or installing the piece. You're assessing how they handle missing information, not asking for free production work.
Have them explain their own part in a completed job. Which pieces or areas did they produce or install, who checked them, and what needed correction?
Materials and work areas
Discuss a missing or damaged delivery. How did the candidate record the problem and change the work plan? For a lead, ask how they coordinate access and installation space with other trades.
Ask how they know an area is ready before sending the crew. What information goes to the project manager when another trade or unresolved drawing prevents progress? The office needs enough detail to arrange the next step.
For shop work, discuss how revisions are kept separate from earlier fabrication information. A change that never reaches the person making the part becomes a field problem later.
Supervising the installation crew
For a foreman, ask how they divide tasks, introduce new workers, and check completed installation. Find out how they record unfinished areas and the materials needed for the return visit.
State the support available from the project manager and designer. A lead needs a route for getting answers when the field condition differs from the approved plan.
Shop and field working terms
Include shop or field duties, materials, required experience, supervisor, training, work locations, hours, duration, tools, pay range, benefits, travel, and expenses.
Post the sheet-metal opening. Related guides cover HVAC technicians, controls, and data-center cooling work.
