Gilbane announced on June 30 that the structural steel frame was topped out for the first building in the initial phase of QTS's data center campus in York, South Carolina.

The milestone identifies a building that has advanced through steel erection. It gives electrical and low voltage contractors a reason to check the interior schedule and remaining trade scope.

One building in a larger plan

Gilbane's report describes a planned nine-building campus with closed-loop cooling. Gilbane is the builder, and construction remains underway.

The release forecasts thousands of construction and permanent jobs across the project. It supplies no separate peak construction count or permanent workforce number. The broad forecast should not be turned into a precise electrician hiring claim.

It also gives no building delivery date, electrical contract value or campus power rating. Those details need their own documents.

Steel completion is a cue to check readiness

The useful contractor question is what work the topped-out building can support next. Obtain the current enclosure and interior release dates before scheduling material and crews. A completed frame does not prove dry, accessible work areas or installed equipment.

Electrical firms need to know who buys and handles major equipment and when the building must be ready for testing. Fire alarm and security firms need system boundaries and the party responsible for integration. Fiber and rack crews need to distinguish campus infrastructure from customer installations.

The planned cooling approach also leaves a controls scope to define. Ask for the issued sequences, points and test requirements. The phrase “closed-loop cooling” alone does not tell a bidder how many devices to wire or who will accept the system.

A named builder makes this lead usable

Gilbane's participation gives local firms a specific company to research for qualification and procurement. The steel announcement does not say any remaining package is open. Check the project name, phase and buyer when seeking work, rather than assume all nine buildings are being bought together.

For workers, a site offer should state the employer, trade assignment, start date and expected duration. Compare its terms with the South Carolina electrician pay report. The campus job forecast supplies none of those terms.
