Amazon's Energy Way Tech Campus and supporting Duke Energy work in Hamlet entered a linked public air-permit review in July. North Carolina scheduled a July 30 hearing on separate applications for the data center and improvements at Duke's Richmond County turbine facility.

For electrical and controls contractors, the notice identifies two construction scopes and two applicants. The campus and its supporting power work should not be treated as one bid.

What the state reviewed

NC DEQ's hearing notice places Amazon's project at 198 Energy Way and Duke's facility at 1761 Airport Road in Hamlet. Staff made a preliminary determination that permits could be issued if specified conditions were met.

A preliminary determination is not the final issued permit. The notice links applications, draft permits and technical reviews, but this source review did not establish the final disposition of both applications.

The comment period ended July 31. That date should not be presented as a current invitation to submit comments.

The wider campus plan

Amazon's community update describes its previously announced $10 billion Richmond County plan and at least 500 high-skilled jobs, with additional construction and supply-chain employment expected.

Those job forecasts do not establish how many electricians are working on either permit scope. The owner's workforce outreach also includes operating and install-technician careers, which are not all building construction roles.

Why the power interface matters

A campus contractor needs to know when its supply will be available and which party controls the connection and acceptance. A utility contractor needs its own approved scope and schedule. Delays on either side can affect system testing inside the buildings.

The permit review is useful evidence of project development. It is not an unawarded-package list or a current hiring notice. Confirm the buyer and actual construction authorization before committing a crew.

Use the North Carolina pay report to compare a confirmed electrical offer. Keep campus hiring and power-facility hiring distinct.
