Microsoft announced its intent to buy roughly 3,200 acres southeast of downtown Cheyenne on April 14. The planned data center expansion begins a multiyear planning and development process, including public hearings.

For a Wyoming electrical contractor, that places the work in the forward pipeline. It does not establish an immediate construction start across the new land.

The expansion and the existing footprint

Microsoft's announcement, updated June 8, describes two parcels: about 200 acres in Bison Business Park and about 3,000 acres beside it.

The company reports more than 320 current full-time employees in Cheyenne and nearly 2,000 skilled tradespeople involved in building its existing footprint over more than a decade. Those are different measures from future expansion employment.

Microsoft expects the new buildout to require thousands of tradespeople and support hundreds of operating roles. It does not publish an electrician-only hiring schedule.

Power and infrastructure

The owner says its arrangement with Black Hills Energy uses the Large Power Contract Service tariff, requiring Microsoft to pay for the upgrades and power needed to serve its load. It also describes more than $68 million in completed and future offsite infrastructure commitments across Cheyenne.

That combined figure is not money already spent solely on these new parcels. The release does not supply individual construction bids or energization dates.

The practical contractor question

A land plan does not tell a shop when its crew will work. Track the development approvals, defined utility scope and construction buyer before moving the project into committed manpower.

When a package emerges, establish which site and phase it covers. A firm working on an existing Microsoft facility may have a different schedule and contract from the team developing the new acreage.

The Wyoming pay report can support an actual job comparison. The owner announcement confirms an expansion plan and historical local activity, not a current list of construction vacancies.
