Meta's Tulsa build includes fiber and cabling training

Meta forecasts about 1,000 workers at peak construction in Tulsa. Its training plan matters to low voltage firms, but it is not a ready crew roster.

Meta's Tulsa data center gives low voltage contractors two things to watch: the construction schedule and a proposed training program that includes fiber optics and structured cabling. The training plan could help build a local labor pool. It does not tell a contractor how many qualified installers are available for a particular start date.

In its April 21 groundbreaking announcement, Meta put the investment above $1 billion. The company forecast roughly 1,000 construction jobs at peak and about 100 operating jobs. Those figures cover different phases and should not be added together as current vacancies.

What the training plan covers

Meta announced a partnership with Tulsa Tech and Tulsa Community College for digital infrastructure training and a learning lab. It expects more than 200 graduates a year across several fields, including fiber optics, structured cabling, cooling and other technical subjects.

That is a forecast for the broader program, not 200 experienced cabling technicians. The announcement does not give a count of graduates already placed, the date each class will finish or the number assigned to construction work.

Why it matters to a low voltage shop

A contractor pulling cable needs installers who can work safely, follow labeling standards and leave clean test records. A contractor terminating fiber needs the right skills and tools. Training in one area does not prove readiness for the other.

The practical step is to ask the schools what students will learn, which credentials they can earn and how employers can meet them. Ask about hands-on hours and supervised placements. Match that information to the work your firm actually sells.

New entrants can help a crew when experienced leads have time to train them. If every lead is already carrying a full schedule, adding trainees can create another demand on supervision. That is a staffing judgment for the contractor, not an outcome established by Meta's announcement.

Find the package before holding a crew

Data center cabling, rack assembly and electrical installation can sit in different contracts and start at different times. A firm looking for Tulsa work should first identify who is buying its scope.

Then ask for the package dates, site access requirements, testing standards and payment terms. This source review did not establish which specialty contracts are available, which firms won them or whether any named contractor is recruiting rack installers today.

What workers should check

Our Oklahoma pay report records a $29.33 median hourly electrician wage from May 2025 BLS data. It does not measure low voltage pay or the wages offered at this campus.

Before applying, get the employer's name, trade, pay, hours and expected duration. Ask whether the job is construction, equipment installation or facility operations. The answer changes the skills required and the length of the assignment.

The useful follow-up to this announcement is a firm construction package schedule and a training intake that employers can use. Until those details are confirmed, the campus and school forecasts remain planning information.
