Hire rack-and-stack technicians
A deployment hire needs to place the right equipment, make the assigned connections, and leave an accurate ticket. Say which configuration and remote-hands duties come with the job.
Hardware deployment and remote hands
List the racks, servers, network equipment, cable connections, and inventory records assigned to the position. Tell candidates whether the site is a new build, an expansion, or an operating facility with customer tickets.
A network installer may fit switches and connect assigned ports while an engineer handles configuration. Make that division clear. If the role includes software setup or network changes, describe those duties and use the network engineer guide to assess the relevant experience.
For remote-hands work, explain the ticket types, supervision, customer contact, and shift. Applicants need to know whether they're installing a planned deployment or responding to requests throughout the night.
Work orders and incorrect identifiers
Use a fictional rack elevation and ticket. One equipment identifier or port assignment doesn't agree with the record. Ask what they check, who they contact, and what they write before the assignment continues.
The useful answer confirms the authorized task and resolves the mismatch. It shouldn't depend on recognizing a cable and assuming the connection is available to change. Ask how they keep completed work and remaining work distinct in the ticket.
For an experienced technician, ask about an actual deployment they finished. How did they record serial numbers, rack positions, labels, and assigned connections? Which information did the next team need before it could begin configuration?
Equipment deliveries and crew planning
Discuss a delivery with damaged or missing equipment. Who was informed, how was the condition recorded, and what could the crew still do? For a lead, ask how they assigned rack areas and checked the work before reporting completion.
Include lifting equipment, tools, staffing, and training appropriate to your installation. Tell applicants the real physical duties and available support rather than copying an arbitrary requirement from another vacancy.
Access, approvals, and shift handoff
Explain access, escort, work-order, and change approval arrangements. Ask how the candidate handled a request that wasn't in the ticket. Who could authorize it, and how did the office or shift lead learn what happened?
A shift handoff should identify the work completed, equipment condition, discrepancies, and next owner. Ask for a short sample ticket update using fictional information.
Shift, tools, travel, and pay
Include the site, equipment, ticket and configuration scope, reporting lead, shift, weekend work, duration, pay range, training, tools, and travel expenses.
Post the rack-and-stack opening. For termination and test work, see data-center cabling. The data-center hub covers the other work packages.
