Hire fire-alarm technicians
A wiring crew, a service technician, and an inspection hire need different job briefs. Start with the systems and the responsibility you're handing over.
Installation, service, or inspection
Name the supported panels and devices, building types, and main assignment. For wiring crews and installers, describe the cable and device work, drawings, supervision, and checks expected before the lead takes over.
A service technician needs relevant fault-finding experience and clear support contacts. A testing or inspection hire needs to understand the assigned checks and records. Say who plans the work, reviews results, and handles deficiencies.
Verify the qualifications and permitted work for the location and assignment. If NICET certification is required, name the program and level. NICET lists Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems separately from its Fire Alarm Systems program. Check the actual requirement rather than treating every certification reference as the same thing.
Recurring faults and service notes
Ask about a recurring fault the applicant handled. What did the customer report? What records and observations helped them investigate? Which work did they perform, and when did they involve a lead or manufacturer support?
Then ask what happened if the fault wasn't reproduced. Their note should say what was checked, what remained uncertain, and the next step. A ticket closed without that information can leave the office booking the same visit again.
Use fictional information or redacted records. Assess the candidate's reasoning and experience without asking for changes to a customer's live system.
Test records and deficiencies
Have the applicant explain one test or inspection record. How are device identity, expected results, observations, and unresolved items recorded? Who sees a deficiency, and how is the follow-up assigned?
Ask about a check that couldn't be completed. What was missing, who needed to act, and how did it stay visible? You need an accurate account of unfinished work when planning the next appointment.
For an installation lead, discuss drawing changes and device records. How did the final information reach the service and testing staff?
Access and appointments
Occupied buildings require coordination. State who arranges the customer window, site contacts, and any other participants in authorized tests. A technician shouldn't arrive to discover that nobody arranged access to the rooms.
Give sprinkler work its own staffing plan. Sprinkler pipefitters have a separate trade assignment even when they share the project with your alarm crew.
Platforms, qualifications, and job terms
Include platforms, independent duties, credentials, training, reviewer, service territory, hours, on-call rotation, pay range, benefits, tools, vehicle, and travel expenses.
Post the fire-alarm vacancy. For intrusion systems, use the security technician guide.
