Hire BIM and CAD technicians
Tell candidates whether they're producing drawings, building models, or coordinating installation space. Name the software, reviewer, and issue deadlines.
Drawing production or model coordination
Describe the systems, software, file standards, and outputs. An AutoCAD drafter following marked-up drawings has a different assignment from a BIM modeler coordinating routes and equipment with other trades.
State who owns the technical design and reviews the finished package. If the employee is also expected to make design decisions, describe that work and the qualifications needed. Software proficiency doesn't settle design responsibility.
For a model-coordination role, explain the meetings, field input, and decisions the person will handle. Tell applicants whether they work with the project team, fabrication team, installation lead, or all three.
Revisions and current drawings
Ask about a drawing or model change from the candidate's work. What information arrived, what did they update, and who checked the result? How did the team know which version was current?
Use a fictional marked-up drawing with an unclear note. Ask what they'd clarify before issuing it. A useful answer identifies the missing decision and gets it from the responsible person rather than silently inventing a solution.
For an experienced candidate, review a permitted redacted sheet or model view. Have them explain what they produced personally and how the information was used on site.
Coordination with the installation
Discuss a route or equipment location that conflicted with another trade. What did the candidate identify, who agreed on the answer, and which documents changed?
For a BIM role, ask how they distinguish a model issue from a field issue. What information do they need before reporting a conflict as resolved? The installation crew needs a workable, approved answer, not simply a cleaner view in the model.
Ask about fabrication or field-layout outputs only if your role produces them. Put those responsibilities in the opening and explain the review process.
Working files and issued packages
Ask how the candidate organizes working files, references, revisions, and issued packages. How does another technician pick up the work during leave? Which records identify open questions and review comments?
Tell candidates your standards and onboarding support. A good drafter still needs to learn how your company names, checks, and issues work.
Software, support, and pay
Include systems, software, deliverables, design boundaries, reviewer, required experience, training, team, deadlines, site visits, location, hours, pay range, benefits, and workstation.
Post the BIM or CAD opening. Related guides cover electrical engineers and telecom designers.
