Residential Electrician Interview Questions

Questions and evidence

1. Walk me through a recent residential project from the first site visit to closeout.

Record the project type, candidate’s own tasks, supervision and outcome. Ask what another crew member handled.

2. How did you assess existing conditions before planning a remodel?

Listen for a methodical review, documented unknowns and escalation when the work exceeded the approved scope.

3. Tell me about a conflict between the drawings and site conditions.

Look for confirmation with the responsible person before changing the work, followed by an accurate record of the decision.

4. How do you establish safe conditions before working on an existing installation?

Look for a clear, appropriate process, verification and a willingness to stop. Have a qualified electrical reviewer assess technical answers.

5. A kitchen layout changes after work has begun. What do you confirm before proceeding?

Look for revised requirements, coordination with the supervisor and other trades, and clear treatment of schedule and material changes.

6. Describe a residential fault you diagnosed.

Ask how the candidate narrowed the cause, used test results and verified the completed repair. Avoid accepting a list of tools as evidence of diagnostic ability.

7. What changes when the home is occupied?

Look for access planning, protection of finishes, controlled disruptions, cleanup and respectful communication through the appropriate contact.

8. Describe an inspection correction you handled.

Ask what was corrected, who approved the approach and how the candidate confirmed closeout. Do not reward blame or claims of never making an error.

9. How have you coordinated with an apprentice or another trade?

Ask for the actual assignment, checks and escalation. Match supervision questions to the role being hired.

10. What information do you leave at the end of a job?

Look for accurate circuit identification, required test records, outstanding issues and a clear handover appropriate to the project.

Record the assessment consistently

Score each area from 1 to 4: residential project experience, technical reasoning, safety judgment, coordination, and documentation. Add notes and evidence beside every score. Use “Not assessed” when there is insufficient evidence; do not silently turn missing evidence into a low score.

1 means the answer remained vague or unsupported after follow-up. 2 means the candidate explained part of the work but needed substantial prompting. 3 means the candidate gave a clear account with sound reasoning and a relevant example. 4 means the candidate also explained tradeoffs, verification and how problems were prevented or corrected.

Use scores to structure discussion, not as an automatic hiring decision. Record serious safety concerns separately and ask a qualified reviewer to resolve them. Check applicable credentials and references separately. A strong interview does not replace either check.
