Apprentice or trainee

  • Vermont has no apprentice license. Apprentices register with the Vermont Department of Labor's apprenticeship program.
  • The Department of Labor lists the electrician apprenticeship at 8,000 hours. The licensing rules don't state an hour total.

Journeyman

  • Verification from the Vermont Apprenticeship Council that you completed an electrical wiring apprenticeship, or equivalent training the Board accepts.
  • The Board may approve you to test after the classroom portion, but the license issues only after the work portion is done.

Exam and application

  1. Apply to the Division of Fire Safety. Approval to test lasts three years.

  2. Prov gives a written or computer-based exam plus a practical skills exam. Pay the $80 exam fee to Prov.

  3. After two retakes, you need a new application and 8 hours of NEC education.

Fees

Item Amount
Journeyman license, 3 years (initial or renewal) $115
Late renewal, within 1 year +$25
Exam (paid to Prov) $80

Exam vendors often charge their own testing fee on top of state fees.

Reciprocity

Vermont belongs to the National Electrical Reciprocal Alliance (NERA): a license from a member state must be held for one year. Other states qualify if you held an equivalent license in good standing for three years. Agreements with New Hampshire and Maine remain.
