Apprentice or trainee

  • Kentucky has no apprentice license. Apprenticeships must be registered with the Kentucky Labor Cabinet to count as approved training.
  • Experience counts from your 16th birthday.

Journeyman

  • 8,000 hours in the electrical trade.
  • An approved training program of at least 288 classroom hours, or an electrical associate degree, can substitute for 4,000 hours.
  • If you've finished 2 years of an approved 4-year apprenticeship, you can qualify, but you must finish the rest within 4 years.
  • Prove hours with notarized employer letters or tax returns.

Exam and application

  1. Pass the ICC electrician exam through Pearson VUE: 80 questions in 4 hours, open book, 70% to pass. Results are valid 3 years.

  2. Then submit the license application to DHBC.
