Apprentice or trainee

  • Register as an apprentice. Hours count only while your registration is active.
  • A Board-approved four-year program of related instruction is the normal education route.

Journeyman

  • 8,000 supervised hours plus a Board-approved four-year apprenticeship.
  • Experience-only route: 16,000 hours, with no schooling or registration needed.
  • Up to 2,000 limited-installer hours count. Appliance repair, motor winding and communications work don't.

Exam and application

  1. Take the PSI exam first, then apply for the license through DOPL.

  2. You can test after finishing the four-year program, before all hours are in. The license is held until 8,000 hours are verified.
