Steel River Energy Center broke ground in Mississippi County, Arkansas, on July 14. Google and Cypress Creek Energy are developing a large solar and battery project to add supply to the regional grid.

The work gives electrical contractors a reason to follow the power projects behind the data center boom, as well as the campuses that consume the power.

What is being built

Google's announcement says it will support the first two phases as an investor and power buyer. Those phases plan 1.6 gigawatts of solar capacity measured on a direct-current basis and 1.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage.

The full three-phase development targets 2.5 gigawatts of solar and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of storage once fully operational in 2029. Power capacity and stored energy are different measurements. The solar figure is not continuous output, and the storage figure is not the battery's discharge power rating.

The announcement forecasts approximately 700 local construction jobs. It does not give an electrician-only count or current vacancies.

The local supply connection

The owner says structural steel will be U.S.-made, sourced from the nearby Big River facility and manufactured at PACO Steel's Arkansas plant. That connects construction spending with the county's steel industry.

The release also estimates $300 million in taxes over the project's life. That is a projection over time, not tax revenue already collected this year.

Why phases matter to a bidder

A firm bidding the first two phases should not size its crew from the ultimate three-phase capacity. Get the specific array, collection system, substation or storage scope and the acceptance dates that belong to it.

Solar installation and battery controls can also require different staff. The scope must establish who installs, connects and tests the equipment and who signs off before power can be delivered. The groundbreaking release does not publish those contract boundaries.

Where the hiring evidence stops

The records reviewed here establish a start milestone and planned capacity. They do not identify every awarded trade package, remaining bid or wage schedule. The 2029 target does not guarantee continuous work for one crew until then.

Use the Arkansas pay research when reviewing an actual assignment. The employer's package and phase dates should decide the hiring plan.
