IU Health's downtown hospital build reaches beyond the towers
The Indianapolis campus includes a central utility plant, support buildings and a December 2027 opening target.

IU Health's new downtown Indianapolis hospital is planned to open in December 2027. The construction program combines adult care from Methodist and University hospitals into a new campus along 16th Street.
The hospital towers are only part of the work. A central utility plant and several support buildings make this a campus-wide electrical and controls project.
What is being built
The owner's project details list 864 private inpatient rooms, 50 operating rooms and 110 emergency care spaces. The campus also includes a medical office building, a south support building and a medical education and research building.
The utility plant is planned to provide chillers, boilers, heat-recovery chillers, sterilization steam, fire protection water and backup generators. These systems connect the construction schedule to the hospital's ability to operate.
IU Health's July 29 update provides dated construction and road-impact information. Those dates establish the period covered by that look-ahead. They do not describe every task occurring in October.
Why an electrical contractor should care
The utility plant has its own equipment, controls and acceptance sequence. A hospital installation package can depend on those services becoming ready. The contractor needs to know which buyer owns each system and how the schedule handles delayed equipment or unfinished interfaces.
A communications or security firm needs a similar answer for network rooms and building connections. Campus work can cross several structures even when a bid title names only the hospital.
For fire alarm work, establish which buildings and interfaces are in the package and who coordinates the acceptance process. Finishing one area does not necessarily complete the contractor's obligation across the campus.
Hiring and procurement
The owner page links vendor registration and prequalification information. It also carries procurement wording referring to hiring vendors through 2025. That older wording should not be treated as proof that a particular package remains open now.
This review did not verify a current electrician-only headcount or available trade bids. Construction hiring belongs to the employers doing the work; IU Health's clinical hiring is a separate market.
For nearby contractors, the job is a reason to examine labor commitments alongside other large Indiana builds. The records do not measure how much it has changed local pay or crew availability. Use the Indiana pay research when comparing a confirmed offer, then account for the employer, scope, hours and phase duration.
