Avera's Sioux Falls tower build shares streets with a road reconstruction

The hospital targets early 2027 completion for its women’s and children’s tower. A separate street project changes loading-dock and emergency access.

Avera is building a six-story, 220,000-square-foot addition at its McKennan hospital in Sioux Falls. The owner targets early 2027 completion. Contractors also have a separate street reconstruction to account for when bringing materials onto the campus.

Two projects, one delivery route

The city's August 31 update says the final phase of 20th Street reconstruction was expected to begin September 14 between 7th and 8th avenues. It directs Avera loading-dock deliveries from Cliff Avenue and emergency responders toward 7th Avenue. Road completion is expected in November.

That road contract has its own contractor, T&R Contracting, and a listed value of $1.775 million. It should not be counted as the hospital tower budget.

A foreman planning a truck delivery needs the current campus instructions. An older map can put a delivery on an emergency-access route or leave a truck without a usable unloading approach. Confirm the day's route and receiving window with the site, particularly while the street phases change.

What the tower adds

Avera's project page describes a new main entrance and centralized space for birthing, nursery and pediatric services. It also identifies shell space for future education, conference and administrative uses.

Shell space matters when estimating electrical and communications work. Establish what must be complete at turnover and what is reserved for a later fit-out. A full floor area is not evidence that every room gets a finished system in this contract.

The new entrance also makes security, access control and fire alarm transitions part of the campus move. Ask how the new building connects to existing systems and who owns the changeover. Hospital operations, tower construction and road crews each need a usable access plan.

Hiring and timing

These sources establish the building scope and a specific logistics constraint. They do not publish trade headcounts or identify available electrical packages. The city's November road target and Avera's early 2027 building target describe different jobs.

For contractors, the useful next step is to obtain the remaining tower schedule and approved delivery plan. For workers, the South Dakota pay report provides state context for an actual offer, including whether travel changes the economics.
