Journeyman Electrician Position Overview
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
As a Journeyman Electrician at First Contracting, your day-to-day responsibilities will include installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial environments. You will troubleshoot electrical issues, plan and execute installations, and ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Michigan-specific regulations.

You will work on a variety of projects, including multi-family remodels, senior housing retrofits, and new construction projects. Our projects are often dynamic and require flexibility and a keen problem-solving mindset. You will be part of a team led by a Senior Journeyman Electrician, working alongside other journeymen and apprentices. Collaboration is key, and you will often supervise and mentor apprentices, ensuring quality and safety in all tasks.

Core Journeyman Electrician Responsibilities
- Perform electrical work on multi-family remodels and senior housing retrofits.
- Install and update service panels, terminate circuits, and mount boxes.
- Run EMT and MC cable efficiently and accurately.
- Supervise apprentices on active job sites, providing guidance and training.
- Follow NEC and Michigan electrical codes rigorously.
- Communicate effectively with project managers to maintain project timelines.
- Retrofit outdated systems to meet current code requirements.
- Ensure safety in occupied housing units and maintain a clean work environment.
- Complete work on prevailing wage projects under HUD/MSHDA guidelines.
- Advanced technical duties include designing electrical layouts for complex installations, performing energy-efficient retrofits, and implementing smart home technologies.
- Regional project specifics include adapting to local building codes and working with diverse client needs.
Qualifications
- Valid Michigan Journeyman Electrician License.
- Minimum of 5 years of residential field experience.
- Strong knowledge of NEC and Michigan codes.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and scopes of work.
- Previous experience working on federally-funded or prevailing wage jobs.
- Must provide own hand tools and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Must be reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of training junior electricians.
- Preferred 5-7 years minimum experience as a Journeyman Electrician.
- Essential certifications include OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, and CPR/First Aid.
- Required technical knowledge of complex electrical systems, energy efficiency standards, and smart technology integration.
Tools & Equipment
- Daily tools include multimeters, wire strippers, conduit benders, and voltage testers.
- Required personal tools: screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, and tool belt.
- Company-provided equipment includes ladders, specialized testing equipment, and safety gear.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Work involves standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Safety gear needed includes hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
