Compensation

The base hourly rate for this position is $44.10.

Position Overview

Are you an experienced maintenance professional who enjoys troubleshooting complex equipment, working with PLCs and controls, and solving problems that keep a manufacturing operation running? This role provides the opportunity to put your electrical, instrumentation, controls, and automation expertise to work in a hands-on manufacturing environment.

 

As a Controls Technician, you will play an important role in supporting the safe and reliable production of roofing materials. You'll perform electrical, instrumentation, and controls maintenance, troubleshoot electrical and automated systems, support PLC-controlled equipment, and help identify long-term solutions that improve equipment reliability and uptime.

 

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on troubleshooting, solving challenging equipment issues, improving reliability, and sharing technical knowledge with others.

 

Your Day to Day:

  • Follow all Johns Manville safety and environmental requirements, electrical safe-work practices, and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs); report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Provide day-to-day troubleshooting and technical support for plant electrical, instrumentation, controls, automation, and industrial-networking systems.
  • Perform industrial electrical installation, maintenance, and repair involving power and control circuits, conduit, cable, grounding, motor controls, power distribution, control panels, and associated wiring.
  • Respond to equipment downtime, process disruptions, and plant outages by diagnosing and correcting PLC, HMI, instrumentation, VFD, SCADA, networking, and process-control issues.
  • Use PLC programming software, ladder logic, HMI information, and operating parameters to understand equipment sequences, identify problems, and recommend logic or process-control improvements.
  • Install, configure, calibrate, test, maintain, and troubleshoot sensors, transmitters, field devices, control valves, instrumentation, PLC hardware, and related automated equipment.
  • Read electrical schematics, control drawings, P&IDs, loop diagrams, network drawings, and technical documentation to support troubleshooting and equipment improvements.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance, RCCA investigations, FPY improvement, equipment reliability, commissioning, startups, upgrades, modifications, and capital projects.
  • Maintain accurate work-order feedback, calibration records, controls documentation, network information, equipment configurations, and current PLC and HMI program backups.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to operations and maintenance personnel, communicate recurring issues and recommended solutions, and maintain clean and organized work areas.

 

Technical Support

This position serves as a technical leader and plantwide resource for electrical and control systems.

  • Lead and support complex troubleshooting, calibration, testing, repair, outage response, equipment startup, and control-system recovery activities.
  • Coach and train operations and maintenance personnel on electrical systems, instrumentation, PLCs, HMIs, drives, automation equipment, and effective troubleshooting practices.
  • Review equipment operation, PLC logic, alarms, interlocks, permissives, timers, setpoints, and process conditions to identify recurring issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Recommend electrical, programming, instrumentation, automation, reliability, and process-control improvements to plant leadership and project teams.
  • Support applicable NEC and NFPA 70E requirements, plant standards, technical documentation, equipment upgrades, capital projects, and cross-functional problem-solving.

 

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Associate degree in electrical technology, instrumentation, industrial automation, engineering technology, or a related field is preferred; a bachelor degree is beneficial but not required. Relevant industrial experience and demonstrated technical capability are key considerations.
  • Five (5) or more years of practical electrical, instrumentation, automation, or controls experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and programming PLC-controlled equipment and using ladder logic, HMI applications, and program data to understand equipment operation.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, automation, instrumentation, motor controls, power distribution, industrial networks, and electrical safety.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, controls drawings, P&IDs, loop diagrams, network drawings, and equipment documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, RCCA, reliability, communication, and technical-training skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with operations, maintenance, engineering, information technology, contractors, vendors, and plant leadership while managing multiple priorities.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, controls-related software, and standard business applications, with the ability to maintain accurate technical documentation and equipment backups.
  • This position will primarily work a day-shift schedule. Willingness and availability to temporarily support night-shift operations for approximately three to six months is preferred but is not currently required.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule. While on call, the employee must be available by phone, respond promptly, provide remote technical support, and report onsite when needed to safely restore equipment or plant operations in a timely manner.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for training, equipment acceptance, technical support, and project activities.

 

Preferred Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical power and control systems from 24VDC through 480VAC, including three-phase power, motor controls, Motor Control Centers, Variable Frequency Drives, power distribution, grounding, and electrical safe-work practices.
  • Proficient in reading electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control drawings, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and other technical documentation used to troubleshoot plant equipment and process-control systems.
  • Proficient with Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMI systems, including online troubleshooting, ladder-logic interpretation, equipment sequences, interlocks, permissives, alarms, timers, setpoints, remote I/O, program backups, and authorized programming changes.
  • Ability to use PLC and HMI information to understand equipment operation, diagnose electrical and process-related problems, and recommend programming or control-system improvements.
  • Experience installing, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting industrial instrumentation, sensors, transmitters, control valves, measurement devices, and PID control loops.
  • Experience troubleshooting automated manufacturing equipment, including electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electromechanical, instrumentation, and process-control systems.
  • Working knowledge of industrial Ethernet networks and communications between PLCs, HMIs, drives, remote I/O, instrumentation, SCADA, historian, and other plant systems.
  • Ability to use SCADA and plant historian information to evaluate process conditions, investigate equipment or quality issues, identify operating trends, and support troubleshooting.
  • Ability to maintain accurate control-system backups and technical documentation and recommend improvements that support safety, reliability, product quality, and operational performance.

 

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements of this position include:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift, push, or pull at least 50 pounds using proper body mechanics, including while working in awkward positions.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand movements; bend, stoop, crouch, or kneel; reach overhead; and climb stairs, ladders, and equipment-access platforms.
  • Ability to work safely in a fast-paced industrial environment that may be dusty and may experience temperature extremes and equipment downtime conditions.
  • Ability to use required personal protective equipment and work around electrical equipment in accordance with applicable training, authorization, and electrical safe-work practices.
  • Ability to access electrical rooms, control panels, equipment enclosures, production areas, and other plant locations required to perform assigned work.
