Hire data-center commissioning technicians
Hire for the test package your project needs completed. Ask candidates to explain the checks they performed, the defects they found, and the records they left.
Systems and test responsibilities
Electrical equipment, cooling, controls, and integrated system tests need different experience. Name the assigned systems, test stage, documents, and responsible commissioning lead. State whether this person prepares procedures, performs assigned checks, witnesses work, or reviews results.
The project also needs a clear distinction between installation checks and acceptance. Identify who confirms readiness, authorizes the work, resolves defects, and accepts the result. Don't make a new technician guess how those responsibilities are divided.
If you're hiring a lead or engineer, describe the planning, technical review, and team responsibility separately from field test support.
Test results and equipment records
Use a fictional test sheet or a redacted example the candidate is permitted to share. Ask them to explain the requirement, expected observation, actual result, and any follow-up. Find out which part they performed themselves.
Then introduce a discrepancy: the equipment identifier in the test record doesn't match the drawing. What do they check before continuing? Ask how the corrected information reaches the people who will use the report.
A complete-looking form can still leave the owner with unanswered questions. Find out how the candidate records a check that couldn't be performed and keeps it visible until someone resolves it.
Readiness and test scheduling
“The test is booked for tomorrow, but one dependency isn't ready. What happens next?”
Ask who needs the information, what can still be completed, and who approves a revised plan. Discuss access, equipment status, specialist attendance, and the information needed from the installation team. Keep the exercise about planning and responsibility rather than steps for operating live equipment.
For integrated testing, ask how the candidate worked with other system owners. Which observations belonged to their package, and how were defects assigned across disciplines?
Defects, retests, and handover
Have the applicant describe one failed check through correction and retest. Who owned the defect? What evidence showed it was resolved? How did the final package distinguish accepted work from outstanding items?
The operations team needs current records it can find and interpret. State the file structure, review process, and handover expected on your project. Commissioning shouldn't end with a folder nobody can connect to the installed equipment.
Project dates, travel, and pay
Include systems, project phase, test duties, experience required, supervisor, site, dates, shift, travel, pay range, tools, and expenses. Say whether this is a fixed project assignment or a continuing role.
Post the commissioning vacancy. Related guides cover controls and critical-facilities operations.
