LEGO adds an 80-acre solar plan to its Virginia factory build

The March update pairs factory construction with planned ground and rooftop solar. Growth in LEGO's own staff is an operating workforce forecast.

LEGO's Virginia factory build includes a large electrical job outside the production buildings. On March 18, the company announced plans for an 80-acre solar park at its Chesterfield County site, alongside rooftop solar.

The factory was already under construction. The solar start was still a forecast in that release.

Two solar scopes on one site

The March update describes more than 30,700 ground-mounted panels with 22 megawatts of peak capacity and a rooftop system adding 6.11 megawatts. The owner expected ground-array construction to begin in summer 2026.

Peak capacity is a system rating. It does not mean the array produces that amount continuously or that the factory operates without grid supply.

LEGO said factory construction was progressing toward its 2027 opening. Its October 2025 topping-out report names Gray|Hourigan as the general contractor and describes 13 buildings with more than 1.7 million square feet, including molding, processing, packing and an automated warehouse.

The more than $1.5 billion investment covers the factory and a regional distribution center. It is not a disclosed solar contract value.

What the combined work means

Ground-mounted generation, rooftop generation and factory distribution have different access and turnover requirements. An electrical firm needs to establish how the systems connect and which contractor owns each interface.

The rooftop schedule also depends on when the building is ready for that work. A production controls crew works on another sequence again, tied to machinery installation and acceptance. A single opening date cannot serve as the manpower plan for all three.

The March release is evidence of the owner's solar plan and factory progress. This source review did not verify a completed solar installation, energization date or remaining electrical bids.

The hiring numbers

LEGO expected its own team to grow from more than 500 people across the new site and temporary packing facility to roughly 900 by the end of 2026. That growth prepares for automated molding and packing operations. It is not an estimate of construction electricians needed for solar installation.

A contractor needs its own package's crew count and dates. Compare confirmed offers with the Virginia pay report, and keep the factory's permanent staffing plan separate from trade hiring.
