About Our Journeyman Team
At First Contracting, our Journeyman team is the backbone of our operations in Grand Rapids, MI. Our Journeymen handle a diverse range of projects, from single-family homes and garden-style apartments to complex retrofit projects.
The Journeyman Position
As a Journeyman at First Contracting, your day-to-day responsibilities will be varied and dynamic. You will be working on diverse project types, from retrofits to active remodels, in different environments. You’ll be part of a highly skilled team, working under the supervision of senior staff with significant opportunities for growth within the company.
Core Journeyman Responsibilities
Your core responsibilities as a Journeyman will encompass a range of tasks. You’ll complete retrofit work in single-family homes and garden-style apartments, replace outdated wiring systems, install protective devices, upgrade main service and bonding/grounding systems, and add circuits for various rooms and accessory dwelling units. Additionally, you’ll be expected to integrate battery backup or generator interlocks, perform detailed rough/trim in active remodels, coordinate with inspectors and other trades, and educate residents on safe system use.
Required Experience & Skills
To be considered for the Journeyman position, you must hold a Journeyman license and have a deep understanding of residential retrofit codes and best practices. Confidence working in attics, crawlspaces, and finished spaces is essential, as is skill at neat terminations and finish quality. You should also be able to read remodel plans and produce accurate material takeoffs. Strong safety habits and professionalism when interacting with homeowners are a must. We require at least 4-6 years of experience as a Journeyman.
Tools & Equipment
As a Journeyman, you’ll be using a variety of specialized tools on a daily basis. You should have your own basic hand tools, while more specialized equipment will be provided by the company.
Physical Requirements
The Journeyman role involves physical work, including lifting heavy materials and equipment. You’ll be working in various conditions, from construction sites to finished homes. Safety gear, including hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves, is required at all times.

Compensation Package
Our compensation package reflects our commitment to our team. We offer a competitive salary range of $32.95-$37.47 per hour depending on experience.
