What You’ll Do as a Journeyman Electrician

As a Journeyman Electrician at First Contracting, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining and improving residential and small commercial properties in Ann Arbor, MI. You will work on a variety of projects, from gut-rehabs to light-turn retrofits, always ensuring that our electrical installations are safe, efficient, and up to code.

Your Daily Tasks as a Journeyman Electrician

In this role, you’ll be involved in a broad spectrum of tasks, including participating in gut-rehab and light-turn retrofit scopes in apartment units and small residential complexes. You’ll replace panels and risers, install new subpanels and disconnects, and convert legacy lighting to dimmable LED with smart controls.

You’ll also handle the addition of dedicated circuits for HVAC/heat pumps and laundry, as well as install EVSE circuits in carports/garages. Troubleshooting hidden faults in older plaster or masonry construction is another key part of your job. Be prepared to perform punch-list corrections and closeout testing, all while maintaining clean, resident-safe work areas.

What You Need to Be a Journeyman Electrician

To excel in this role at First Contracting, you’ll need a current Journeyman license and at least 4 years of experience working in retrofit environments. You should be proficient in residential/multifamily wiring methods (NM, MC, EMT) and be capable of fishing walls with minimal patching.

We also expect you to have a good grasp of load calc, circuit tracing, insulation-resistant testing, and labeling standards. Strong customer communication skills are a must as you’ll be interacting with residents and property owners regularly. We’re looking for someone who can work independently and is confident in mentoring helpers.
