What You’ll Do as a Residential Journeyman

At First Contracting, we’re looking for skilled Residential Journeymen to join our team for a multi-year project in Livonia, MI, with additional projects in nearby cities such as Dearborn, Westland, and Farmington Hills. As a Residential Journeyman, you’ll be at the core of our operations, ensuring that every residential electrical project runs smoothly and efficiently. You’ll be working in a dynamic environment where your expertise and leadership will be vital to the success of our projects.

Your Daily Tasks as a Residential Journeyman

• Lead Residential Electrical Projects: You’ll be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of residential electrical work across Michigan. This involves planning, executing, and closing projects while ensuring compliance with all safety and electrical codes.

• Perform Complete Wiring Retrofits on Older Structures: You’ll work on retrofitting older homes, updating their electrical systems to meet current standards and codes, ensuring safety and reliability for future occupants.

• Supervise Small Crews: You’ll oversee small teams of electricians and apprentices, providing guidance and ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and to the highest standards.

• Run Conduit and Terminate Circuits: Your hands-on skills will be essential as you install and maintain electrical conduits and terminate circuits in both new and existing structures.

• Replace Outdated Components: You’ll identify and replace old or faulty electrical components, ensuring that all installations meet modern efficiency and safety standards.

• Coordinate with Site Supervisors: Effective communication with site supervisors will be crucial as you align project goals, timelines, and resources.

• Maintain Daily Logs and Safety Standards: Keeping accurate records and adhering to stringent safety protocols will be a significant part of your daily routine.

• Work on Prevailing Wage Jobs: You’ll have the opportunity to work on government-funded projects, including senior housing renovations, where prevailing wages are applied.

• Troubleshoot Electrical Issues: Diagnose and resolve electrical problems efficiently, ensuring minimal downtime and disruption to project timelines.

What You Need to Be a Residential Journeyman

• Michigan Journeyman Electrician License: A valid license is required to ensure compliance with state regulations.

• Experience and Skills: You should have at least 6-8 years of hands-on experience in residential construction and retrofits, with a proven ability to manage small teams effectively.

• Knowledge of NEC and Michigan-Specific Codes: Extensive understanding of the National Electrical Code and local building codes is essential for ensuring that all work meets legal standards.

• Government-Funded Construction Work: Previous experience with government projects will be beneficial, as many of our projects are funded by public agencies.

• Clean Driving Record and Personal Hand Tools: A clean driving record is necessary for operating company vehicles, and you should have your own set of personal hand tools for daily tasks.

• Problem-Solving and Communication Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities and strong communication skills are crucial for interacting with team members and stakeholders.
