What You’ll Do as a Residential Journeyman

As a Residential Journeyman at First Contracting, you will play a crucial role in our ongoing projects in Jackson, MI, and surrounding areas such as Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Battle Creek. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring the successful completion of our multi-year residential construction projects. This role demands a balance of technical skill, leadership, and a commitment to safety and quality standards.

Your Daily Tasks as a Residential Journeyman

As a Residential Journeyman, your day-to-day responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks aimed at maintaining and enhancing the performance of our residential projects. You’ll lead electrical projects across Michigan, ensuring that every wire, conduit, and circuit is safely and efficiently installed. Your tasks will include:

• Performing Complete Wiring Retrofits: Update and replace old wiring systems in older structures to meet current safety standards and improve functionality.
• Supervising Small Crews: Manage and guide a team of electricians, ensuring that all work is completed on time and to a high standard.
• Running Conduit and Terminating Circuits: Install conduits and complete the final connections of electrical circuits, ensuring reliability and safety.
• Replacing Outdated Components: Identify and replace old or faulty electrical components to enhance system performance.
• Coordinating with Site Supervisors: Work closely with site supervisors to align on project objectives, timelines, and safety protocols.
• Maintaining Daily Logs and Safety Standards: Keep comprehensive records of daily work activities and rigorously adhere to safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
• Working on Prevailing Wage Jobs: Engage in projects such as senior housing renovations, which require precision and adherence to specific regulatory standards.
• Troubleshooting Electrical Issues: Quickly identify and resolve any electrical problems that arise to minimize downtime and maintain project momentum.

What You Need to Be a Residential Journeyman

To excel in this role, you must possess a Michigan Journeyman Electrician License and have at least 6-8 years of hands-on experience in residential construction and retrofits. Key qualifications include:

• Expertise in Managing Small Teams: Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of electricians.
• Extensive Knowledge of NEC and Michigan-specific Codes: A thorough understanding of national and local electrical codes is essential.
• Experience with Government-funded Projects: Previous involvement in government-funded construction projects is highly desirable.
• Clean Driving Record: A valid driver’s license with a clean record is required for travel between project sites.
• Personal Hand Tools: Must own a set of personal hand tools necessary for daily tasks.
• Strong Problem-solving Skills: Ability to quickly identify and solve electrical issues.
• Excellent Communication Abilities: Clear and effective communication with team members and supervisors.
