What You’ll Do as a Residential Journeyman Electrician
As a Residential Journeyman Electrician at First Contracting, you’ll play an essential role in our multi-year project in Battle Creek, MI, with additional opportunities in nearby cities such as Kalamazoo, Marshall, and Albion. Your day-to-day work will involve bringing your expertise to our residential projects, ensuring electrical systems are safe, efficient, and up to code. You’ll be part of a dynamic team focused on retrofitting and renovating electrical systems in residential buildings, contributing directly to the safety and comfort of future tenants.
Your Daily Tasks as a Residential Journeyman Electrician
Full-Scope Electrical Work on Residential Projects
Your primary responsibility will be executing full-scope electrical tasks on retrofit and renovation projects. You’ll install electrical panels, lighting, and outlets, expertly route and secure EMT/MC, and troubleshoot circuit issues with precision.
Upgrading Electrical Systems in Senior Housing Units
You’ll be tasked with upgrading electrical systems in senior housing units, ensuring they meet current safety standards and are reliable for everyday use.
Mentorship and Compliance
Mentoring junior electricians will be a critical part of your role, guiding them through best practices and ensuring compliance with all safety protocols and prevailing wage documentation. Your leadership will be instrumental in maintaining a high standard of work.
Coordination with General Contractors and Inspectors
You’ll coordinate with general contractors and inspectors to ensure projects are completed on time and to specification. Your ability to communicate effectively will be crucial in keeping projects on track.
Additional Common Activities
- Conduct regular safety checks and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
- Engage in hands-on problem-solving to address unforeseen electrical challenges on-site.

What You Need to Be a Residential Journeyman Electrician
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Licensed Journeyman Electrician in Michigan.
- 5-7 years of experience in residential electrical work, particularly in retrofitting outdated systems.
- Strong hands-on abilities, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to safety.
Must-Have Skills
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical diagrams.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve electrical issues effectively.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working in occupied units and liaising with clients and contractors.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working in federal/state-funded housing programs, understanding the nuances and requirements of such projects.
