# Data Center Low-Voltage Jobs: Fiber, Cabling and Racks

> Learn what data center cable technicians do, including fiber, terminations, cable dressing and rack-and-stack work, plus training and pay.

Data center low-voltage technicians build the physical connections between thousands of pieces of equipment. They pull copper and fiber, dress cable, terminate and test links, label every end, install racks and pathways, and help rack and stack equipment.

This is construction and skilled-trade work. It is not a guide to a help-desk job, coding, or administering servers.

## What does a data center cable technician do?

The exact scope depends on the contractor and project phase. Common work includes:

- Installing ladder rack, basket tray, J-hooks, sleeves, and other cable pathways
- Pulling copper and fiber through approved routes
- Dressing large cable bundles so they remain supported, separated, and serviceable
- Terminating copper jacks, patch panels, and approved fiber systems
- Cleaning, inspecting, and testing fiber connections
- Labeling cables, ports, racks, and pathways to match project records
- Building racks, installing rails, and mounting approved equipment
- Connecting patch cords and power whips under the project's work rules
- Recording test results, deficiencies, and completed work

On a hyperscale project, the volume is the story. A normal task may be repeated across rows of racks and several buildings. Speed matters, but a bad label or damaged fiber can create hours of rework.

## Data center low-voltage job titles

Employers mix these titles. Read the duties. A “data center technician” posting may be a cable-construction job, a server-repair job, or a facilities job.

## What is cable dressing?

Cable dressing is the work of routing and supporting cables so they stay organized without being crushed, stretched, over-tightened, or bent past their allowed radius.

Good dressing makes the system easier to test, trace, cool, and change. It includes:

- Keeping the planned route and separation
- Supporting cable at the required intervals
- Protecting bend radius at corners and rack entries
- Using the specified hook-and-loop ties or supports
- Leaving the correct service loop
- Keeping labels readable
- Avoiding blocked airflow and sharp hardware

A bundle that looks neat can still fail inspection if it is too tight, routed through the wrong space, or missing identification.

## Terminating and testing copper

Copper work may include Category 6 or Category 6A cable, modular jacks, patch panels, and equipment cords. The installer follows the project pinout and manufacturer instructions, preserves pair twist, manages jacket length, and keeps bend radius within the specification.

Testing can range from a basic wiremap to full certification for length, insertion loss, return loss, and crosstalk. A technician should know the difference between a cable that has continuity and a permanent link that passes the required standard.

## Terminating, cleaning, and testing fiber

Fiber work demands clean hands, clean tools, and controlled handling. Depending on the contractor, a technician may install preterminated assemblies, make mechanical terminations, perform fusion splicing, or only clean and connect factory ends.

Common tasks include:

- Checking the connector and fiber type
- Inspecting and cleaning end faces
- Managing polarity
- Protecting bend radius and pull tension
- Using a visual fault locator or optical power meter
- Running an OTDR test when the scope calls for it
- Saving the result under the correct cable identifier

Do not stare into a fiber or assume it is dark. Follow the employer's laser-safety and test procedures.

## What does rack and stack mean?

Rack and stack is the physical installation of racks and equipment. It can include assembling and anchoring a rack, installing rails, mounting servers or network equipment, fitting cable managers, connecting approved cables, and checking the rack against the elevation drawing.

The work can be repetitive and physical. It also has a high cost of error. Equipment can be heavy, rack units can be misread, and a connection in the wrong port can delay turnover.

Low-voltage and rack technicians normally do not troubleshoot energized distribution equipment. Electricians handle the building's power systems. ## The Meta Lebanon project shows how large this market is

Meta's Lebanon, Indiana campus is a **more than $10 billion, roughly 4 million-square-foot, 1 GW project**. Meta expects about **4,000 construction jobs at peak**, compared with more than 300 operating jobs after completion.

The project is being delivered by Mortenson, Turner Construction, and Faith Technologies. Faith Technologies is advertising electrical and low-voltage apprentices, electricians, foremen, superintendents, and low-voltage management work for Lebanon.

## Free and paid data center training

### Meta LevelUp Fiber Technician Pathway

Meta and CBRE launched [LevelUp](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/04/meta-cbre-invest-in-american-jobs-new-fiber-technician-training-program/), a free four-week fiber-technician program for people with no prior experience. Meta says graduates can work at U.S. construction sites through its contractor network.

The program is focused on fiber installation. It is a more direct match for cable technicians than a general IT certification.

### America's Workforce Academy

Meta's [America's Workforce Academy application page](https://www.cbre.com/careers/campaigns/americas-workforce-academy) launched Indiana as one of four 2026 pilot locations. Meta and CBRE say the training costs participants nothing, pays them while they learn, awards portable credentials, and guarantees successful graduates a job with a partner.

The academy covers a wider construction pathway, including trades needed to build data centers. Check the official application for current cohort dates, eligibility, travel, stipend, and placement terms.

### Contractor apprenticeships

Faith Technologies advertises both electrical and specialty-systems apprenticeships. Its current Lebanon project page includes an [electrical/low-voltage apprentice opening](https://www.faithtechinc.com/lebanon/).

An apprenticeship and a short training program are not the same. Ask how much supervised work is included, whether hours count toward a recognized apprenticeship, which credential you earn, and which employer hires you after training.

## How much do data center cable technicians make?

There is no federal BLS wage category named “data center cable technician,” so there is no official national average for that exact title.

Meta calls the LevelUp jobs high-paid but does not publish one nationwide wage on the program page. Pay varies by contractor, market, experience, shift, overtime, travel, per diem, and whether the worker is an apprentice, installer, lead, tester, or foreman.

A [2025 U.S. data center salary survey](https://dataxconnect.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/USA-Data-Center-Salary-Survey-2025.pdf) from DataX Connect reported **$82,000 to $101,000** for the broad “technician” category, with a $92,000 average. That category is wider than entry-level cabling and should not be treated as a guaranteed cable-technician salary.

Get the actual offer in writing. Compare:

- Straight-time hourly rate
- Overtime threshold and expected weekly hours
- Night or weekend differential
- Per diem and which days qualify
- Paid travel or relocation
- Health, retirement, and paid-leave benefits
- Training deductions or repayment agreements
- Project duration and the next-job policy

Do not use a licensed journeyman electrician's travel package as the expected rate for a cable installer. The scopes and licenses are different. ### For an apprentice or helper

- Safe hand-tool and ladder use
- Following a drawing, label plan, and written instruction
- Measuring accurately
- Handling cable without damaging it
- Showing up for the assigned shift
- Recording work instead of relying on memory

### For an experienced installer

- Copper termination and certification
- Fiber cleaning, polarity, loss testing, and troubleshooting
- Cable dressing at high volume
- Rack elevations and pathway drawings
- Labeling systems and test-result management
- Working around several trades without damaging completed work

### For a lead or foreman

- Crew planning and production tracking
- Material and tool planning
- Quality checks before formal inspection
- Reading prints and resolving field conflicts
- Coordinating access, shutdowns, and shared pathways
- Writing useful daily reports and turnover records

## What to put on your resume

Do not write only “installed low-voltage cable.” Give the scale, system, and result:

- Pulled, dressed, labeled, and tested Category 6A horizontal cabling across 200 rack positions
- Installed ladder rack and basket tray from approved pathway drawings
- Cleaned and tested single-mode fiber using an optical power meter and documented results by link ID
- Built racks from elevation drawings and completed port-to-port patching from the connection schedule
- Found and corrected reversed polarity, failed terminations, and labeling defects before turnover

Use numbers you can defend. Do not claim fusion splicing, OTDR, testing, or equipment operation if you only watched someone else perform it.

Look at the electrical or low-voltage contractor, not only the data center owner's career page. On large builds, the owner may hire few installers directly while trade partners hire entire crews.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is rack and stack an IT job?

It can sit inside an IT department, but the physical work overlaps with low-voltage construction: installing racks and rails, mounting equipment, managing cables, making approved connections, and following rack elevations.

### Do you need a degree?

Usually not for installation work. Employers care more about trade experience, hands-on ability, safety, reliable attendance, and accurate work. Some programs accept people with no prior experience.

### Do you need a low-voltage license?

Rules vary by state and project scope. Some places license low-voltage or communications work separately; others regulate it through an electrical contractor. Confirm the requirement with the employer and local authority.

### Is fiber work dangerous?

Fiber does not carry the same shock risk as electrical power, but broken glass, laser light, lifting, ladders, tools, and nearby construction work create hazards. Follow the project safety plan and fiber-handling procedures.
